Nearly twice as many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander males than females died from this cause, with a sex ratio of 1.9 male to female deaths. This was lower than the sex ratio in the non-Indigenous population, where 2.4 males died for every female death. The age-standardised death rate for Diseases of the liver was 3.7 times higher (rate ratio of 3.7) for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians compared with non-Indigenous Australians (22.8 per 100,000 and 6.1 per 100,000, respectively).
